SUNDAY I ATE

Breakfast: Grapenuts, cranberry juice, 2 strawberries

LunchPork tacos from the cafe at The Exploratorium. They are quite good… not spicy, by any means, so could be better, but I was quite happy to eat them.

Afternoon snack:  Ice cream. From the place at Ghiradelli Square. This was a nice streetcar ride from The Exploratorium, but then a bit farther a walk than I remembered. I actually love weaving through crowds on Fisherman’s Wharf, but it’s a bit trying with little ones who alternate between wanting to buy everything at every tourist shop, and wanting to just be there already. The ice cream is from Dreyers, which I would call great, but not special. Trying to get into the soda fountain I remember as a kid would have required a 45 minute wait, so we opted to hit the to-go spot… they have all the same stuff in plastic cups and it only took a minute.

Dinner:  Ceasar salad and Pyramid burger from Pyramid Alehouse. This is a great burger with bacon, bbq sauce, and onion rings. Thank god we split it.

LunchLeftover pizza

Afternoon snack:  Dutch chocolate chip ice cream from Fenton’s

Dinner:  Filet tips, green beens, potatoes, salad.

Dessert: Dense chocolate cake with ganache.

FRIDAY I ATE

Breakfast: Grapenuts, cranberry juice, 2 strawberries. The patch is still holding strong, but for how much longer?

Morning snack: Cookies. Specifically some gooey chocolate awesome things Eve brought in. I would have preferred them for my afternoon snack, but had to move fast: they were gone by lunch.

LunchWent to Bissap Baobab, 381 15th St, Oakland, CA, for a co-worker’s farewell party. I had a chicken wrap thing, which was good, but everything everyone else had looked better. I also had fried plantains, which I didn’t need but were too good to stop eating. This place is worth a lunch wpid-wp-1409341458089.jpgwpid-wp-1409341058554.jpg

Afternoon snack:  There was a certain amount of leftover candy from leaving-co-worker’s drawer. 2 coke zeros.

Dinner:  Pizza. With fresh tomatoes.

WEDNESDAY I ATE

Breakfast: Cliff bar (early morning meeting)

LunchBurrito from Vallejos in Sacramento. One of those meals that just does an injury! This was the closest place to our meeting, and we got a recommendation from someone whose cousin owned it or something. Anyway, I ordered a carnitas burrito, and it shows up about the same size as a chinchila. I kid you not, this fucking thing would not have fit through a piece of 4″ PVC. I didn’t finish it, thank god, but it was still like a bomb went off. Sadly, except for the size, it was disappointing. The meat was beautifully cooked, but the flavor was bland.

Afternoon snack:  Frappucino. Not because I was hungry (like hell!) but because I was tired and had a long drive.

Dinner:  Leftover chicken

Dessert:  See’s candy

THURSDAY I ATE

Breakfast: Grapenuts, cranberry juice, fresh strawberries. Bumper crop this morning

LunchTurkey cranberry sandwich from Fat Cat Cafe

Afternoon snack: Coke zero

Dinner:  RiceAndBeansAndZucchiniAndCheeseAndFreshTomatoesFromTheGarden. All run together like that. Yummy. I mean, way, way better than it looks. Homegrown tomatoes cover a multitude of sins. Hell, if I called it “risotto” it’d look fancy.

Dessert: Dear, sweet, god this will be the day, forever known as “The Day The York Tart Was Invented.” This started from a conversation at work. We wanted Junior Mints. Someone suggested I get my wife to make a Junior Mint cake. Twitter hilarity ensued. Tonight, she did it. Next week, she’ll write about it. For the moment, we have cake.

MONDAY I ATE

Location: Salem, OR

Breakfast: Cliff bar (found in my computer bag)

Morning Snack: Fruit at the meeting

LunchHam and brie sandwich from Wild Pear Catering in Salem, OR. This was a great sandwich. The ham was just salty enough and very flavorful. The focaccia was just soft enough to bite without ruining the sandwich.

Afternoon snack:  Frappucino

Dinner:  Root beer float

SUNDAY I ATE

Breakfast: Still feeling the cheeseburger, actually.

Morning Snack: Hummus

LunchPicnic sandwich at Kordness Park. Street slide awesomeness.

Afternoon snack: Gelato from Lush. First time going here, and it was pretty amazing. The flavors were interesting and the gelato was intensely creamy, with no iciness at all. The mint stracciatella was a little earthy (from real mint instead of extract) but some love it that way. The chocolate was amazing.

Dinner:  Rice and beans

SATURDAY I ATE

Breakfast: Pancakes. Eliza was at a sleepover, so Tessa got to chose.

LunchPork chile verde burrito from Cactus

Dinner:  Quite possibly the best burger I’ve ever had in my life. I have no idea what made this particular burger so good… I didn’t even have a hand in making it. I suspect, though, that it was just a confluence of good things. First of all, I think Ginny just buys really good meat from a real butcher. Lee Iacocca wrote in his biography about trying to get the secret to the world’s best burger out of Henry Ford’s personal chef. Eventually the guy showed him: he started by grinding up a USDA prime New York steak. I don’t think this was that good, but nice meat helps. Then there was the tomato. And boy howdy, but was it a tomato. Homegrown, ripe, juicy, 1/2 an inch thick and as big as the burger. Come to think of it, the meat may have been superfluous in this meal. Anyway, it was a damn good cheeseburger.

best cheeseburger ever

Dessert: Chocolate whiskey cake. The final version for flourarrangements.

Dinner:  Experimental herb tart. Tessa had noodles.

Dessert: Leftover skillet cookie
