SATURDAY I ATE

Breakfast: Doughnuts from All Star Doughnuts in El Cerrito

Lunch: Roast beef and rocket attempt. This is the first time I tried since our trip to Friday Harbor. Since Laurie at Market Chef casually mentioned a bunch of things that weren’t in my earlier attempts (like mayonnaise and lemon juice) I had pretty high hopes for this one. The sauce was much, much closer to the original; close enough to make me really suspect that the prepared horseradish from Trader Joe’s is just kinda not that good. It has the smell like it’s going to bite, but then, even with a ton of it dumped in, it just sort of whimpers on the tongue. I need to try something better. I also need to roast my own beef. Not that the packaged stuff is bad, but I always feel like that’s a place to improve. The bread here is the brioche bun that Suzanne has been making every day for 2 weeks while she tries to figure out how to stop them from cracking. This one didn’t solve that problem, but cracking doesn’t stop it being delicious. The rocket, at least, is fresh from the garden, natch.

SUNDAY I ATE

Location: Lopez island to Friday Harbor

Breakfast: Bacon. Also sausage. How great is camping?

Morning Snack:Ice cream. From Lopez Island Creamery.

LunchChicken-bacon-ranch sandwich from Lopez Village Market. This sandwich rocks! I’ve eaten this 3 times, and two of them changed my world. Take a breaded, fried chicken breast. Chop it up with some bacon. Add some white cheese (provolone, maybe)  and some ranch dressing. They offer it as a cold sandwich, a wrap, or a panini. Now,, of the 3 times I’ve been there, once this was listed as the special and I remembered it for a solid year. The next time I went back, I asked and the person seemed really puzzled and ended up making me something that I didn’t really need to eat. I tried again, a year later. Sadly, I got the run around as I tried to describe this heavenly concoction. Then someone in the back, presumably the proprietor of the deli shouted from the back “You want a chickenbaconranch?” and came out to take my order. It was worth the effort.

Afternoon snack: I had ice cream at 11:30 and a chicken bacon ranch sandwich at 1:00. No snack needed.

Dinner:  Leftover Pork Chili Verde.

Dessert: Leftover chocolate chip cookie.

SATURDAY I ATE

Breakfast: Waffles (from The King Arthur Flour Baker’s Companion). Just to clarify, when a recipe says “tsp” that means teaspoon, not the big one… um, and in case you’ve ever wondered, tripling the baking powder and baking soda in a batch of waffles make the dough look like there are hagfish fighting in the bowl. Surprisingly, they didn’t run all over the waffle iron, but they were pretty flabby.

Morning Snack: Apples with peanut butter

LunchSandwiches (leftover chicken)

Afternoon snack:  Chips and Salsa

Dinner:  Yuki Kato’s famous secret flank steak.

Dessert: Mocha Tart. Props to Suzanne for taking it in stride when the tart slid off the seat in transit and got a big divot in it.

Breakfast: Shredded Wheat and grapefruit juice.

Morning snack:  Apricot pie.

Lunch Burrito at Chipotle.

Afternoon snack:  Cake scraps.

Dinner:  Thailand Restaurant in Mill Valley.  After hiking at Muir Woods, we really wanted some Thai food;  this was the closest spot with the best reviews.  The food was fine, but I wouldn’t rush back.

Dessert:  Birthday cake!
