DAY I ATE

Breakfast: Granola, cranberry juice
Morning Snack: A few small pastries (and a piece of pizza) at bike-to-work-day stations.
Lunch: Turkey cranberry sandwich from Cafe Gabriela in Oakland. It was pretty good, but small. I think the mayo was house-made; really tasty. I would order the sopressata sandwich next time, or the pulled pork. The trouble, though, is that they all are on a baguette, which means biting it will send the filling out the other side.
Afternoon snack: Cupcakes from Cupcake Love in Oakland. Brought in for someone’s birthday. Had little bites of each and all very tasty.

Dinner: Pork tenderloin, the backyard bbq recipe from Sarah Foster. Also some corn pancakes with a lime cilantro sour cream sauce. Amazing.
Dessert: Chocolate chip cookies with some ice cream.

FRIDDAY I ATE

Breakfast:  granola aquarium, cranberry juice
Morning Snack:  an Apple. ’cause, you know, I’m healthy like that.
Lunch: oh, wait, I lied. Popeye’s fried chicken and biscuits. Kind of needed a shower afterwards, but damn it was good. Diet coke.
Afternoon snack: not really feeling the need.
Dinner: helped the girls eat their pizza and bbq beef brisket sandwich at Costco. Diet coke
Dessert:  leftover kahlua chocolate cake. A little crumbly in the car, but still delicious road food.

WEDNESDAY I ATE

Breakfast: Grapenuts, cranberry juice
Morning Snack: Apple
Lunch: Turkey sandwich
Afternoon snack: French fries smothered in white gravy with a side of pulled pork. Astonishingly, I hod nothing to do with ordering this, and was seated in front of it along with several vegetarians who were no help at all
Dinner: Ate at Costco. Since I was stuffed with fries and pork (see above) I just nibbled other people’s pizza and bbq beef sandwich.
Dessert: Leftover lemon bars

SUNDAY I ATE

Breakfast: Pancakes
Lunch: BBQ pulled pork sandwich at Buck’s in Woodside. The pork was in a sauce that was a bit sweeter than I like, but still OK. THe onion strings were awesome. Next time, I’d have the burger, which looked awesome.
Afternoon snack: Some mixed nuts
Dinner: Leftover pasta with leftover chicken and some pesto
Dessert: Leftover chocolate fondue on some berries.

MONDAY I ATE:

(Memorial Day)

Breakfast: Grapenuts with cranberry juice

Lunch: Rubio’s. We had a mess in the kitchen already and had to go to the store. Not the best burrito in the world, but fills one up.

Dinner: Pulled pork, sweet potato rolls, coleslaw. Felt like old times. First BBQ of the year in the new backyard.

Dessert: Hand churned buttermilk strawberry ice cream. The recipe was from Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams. Honestly, I was undewhelmed. The recipe called for a certain amount of berries, but then, it turns out, you weren’t supposed to add them all to the ingredients, they were just there to make the pan full while roasting. I have a lot of different sized pans, so that seemed weird. Soldiering on, I just dumped them all into the ice cream. True, it did harden up a lot, which is probably what she was trying to avoid. It still didn’t have a very intense strawberry flavor. I’d never make a buttermilk ice cream again, either; it does, indeed, give it an interesting flavor. In fact, it tastes a lot like Fro-yo. Which sort of tastes like not-as good as ice cream.

Lime BBQ Pork Tenderloin

This is one of our favorite recipes. It’s super easy if you whip up the marinade in the morning and then just leave it in the fridge all day. Then it just takes a few minutes on the BBQ. This was inspired by Sarah Foster’s Casual Cooking, a truly great cookbook. Her version, though, uses orange zest and juice. It turns out, I don’t like orange as a flavor. But since the recipe was nearly perfect in every other respect, we switched to lime which gave it an amazing, almost Jamaican jerk flavor. We often double the sauce to have extra. When tenderloins come in a pack of 2, freeze one in the marinade, and it’s ready to go as soon as it thaws.

Lime BBQ Pork Tenderloin

Simple BBQ pork tenderloin
Prep Time15 minutes
Cook Time20 minutes
Total Time35 minutes
Servings: 4 -6

Ingredients

  • 1 pork tenderloin usually ~2 lbs
  • 1 cup BBQ Sauce can be store bought, but we often use homemade
  • 2 limes zested and juiced
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 cloves garlic minced

Instructions

  • Whisk all the ingredients together in a bowl. Rinse the pork, pat it dry, and drop it into a ziplock with the sauce. Leave it sit for an hour or overnight.
  • Grill the pork on the barbecue, turning every 6 to 7 minutes. Total cooking time usually takes about 20 minutes total. Boil the remaining marinade to use as a sauce, if desired. Allow to rest for a few minutes, then slice and serve.
